 Academics

Your classes will be held on JHU’s Homewood Campus (3400 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21218). See our interactive map or printable map. Traditionally courses are held in several buildings on campus including Clark Hall, Krieger Hall, Maryland Hall, and Shaffer Hall.

Your instructors receive JHU faculty appointments to teach your course. They typically have a PhD and teach college-level courses. Local high school teachers, university graduate students, and former EEI students also assist with the classes serving as teaching fellows and teaching assistants.

Your class will have between 18 and 24 students, with whom you will work closely in teams of up to four to complete engineering projects. Each course has a 12:1 or fewer student-teacher ratio.

You will have access to the JHU Sheridan Libraries online resources and to the Brody Learning Commons study areas on-campus. In addition to offering a place to study and books to consult or borrow, students can print, copy, and scan documents in both facilities.

Curious about what class is like? Visit our Past Syllabi page to explore previous course materials organized by program, year, and course type. While the exact content may evolve, these syllabi offer a great preview of the topics, structure, and hands-on projects you can expect.

Student Life

Please visit the JHU website to view Homewood campus maps.

Most days students will have an hour for lunch.  Occasionally the lab schedule will necessitate a shorter lunch break. The timing of the lunch break may change daily depending upon the schedule, but it will happen between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Commuting students will have an additional fee to cover lunch at the Hopkins Cafe dining hall on the JHU campus during the program.  The lunch fee will be paid with tuition when student enrolls in the program. You’ll share any dietary allergies or restrictions when filling out your application forms.

A month’s parking pass is available to commuting students wishing to park on campus. Please check with the Homewood Parking and Transportation Office to determine the price and availability of parking permits.

Commuter students will have also access to the Johns Hopkins shuttles. Detailed information about shuttle routes and schedules can be found on the Shuttle Services page. The Charm City Circulator is another free transportation option for students. The Maryland Transit Authority (MTA) also offers transportation by bus throughout the city for a fee. These buses require exact change in cash, so come prepared! If you are going to be using buses throughout the day, you can purchase a day bus pass at a discount. Most Johns Hopkins Students prefer to take the JHMI, and Charm City Circulator listed above, but the MTA offers a larger network of bus stops and runs full-time.

Health and Wellness

We recognize that health and wellness is an essential part of supporting our students, so we aim to provide important services to help.

The Ralph O’Connor Rec Center is located on the Homewood campus and has many facilities As part of your enrollment process, you will complete a general application to use these facilities. These facilities have set aside specific hours for our pre-college students; we will share this information with you upon your arrival on campus. Please note that pre-college students will not have access to the swimming pool.

Students who require medical attention will be accompanied by a staff member to receive appropriate care. UM Urgent Care at the Rotunda, located nearby, is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, just a block from campus, is open 24 hours. We prioritize the health and safety of all participants and will ensure you are supported throughout your time in the program.
