Important Information
Requirements for JHSJP-YouthWorks students who select EEI, SEE, or BMEI as their placement:
- Baltimore City residents
- Baltimore City Public Schools students
- Students at least 15 years old by March 31 of the program year
- Good attendance throughout high school
- Meet Engineering Innovation Academic Pre-Requisites:
- As and Bs in your high school math and science classes.
- Completed Algebra II.
- (For EEI) Completed a high school lab science course (Chemistry and/or Physics). Many students feel that knowledge of physics is particularly helpful for the course.
- (For BMEI) Completed a high school Physics course including a lab component where hands-on experiments and lab reports are written. You need to be comfortable with drawing and calculating forces in free-body diagrams, equations of motion, and principles of electric circuits prior to taking the course.
- (For SEE) Completed a high school science course with a lab.
- (For EEI and BMEI) Completed a course where the trigonometric functions are taught. You must be able to use sine, cosine, tangent, and the Pythagorean Theorem to determine angles and side lengths for right-angle triangles.
Accepted students will:
- Receive a full scholarship to attend EEI: In-Person, SEE: In-Person, EEI: Online, or BMEI: Online
- (For EEI) Be invited to attend Engineering FUNdamentals (an optional pre-course introduction to campus and a review of material needed for EEI)
- Be paid $15 an hour for up to 25 hours per week to attend EEI: In-Person, or SEE: In-Person at the JHU Homewood campus as a commuter student or EEI: Online or BMEI: Online
- Be paid $15 an hour for up to 25 hours per week while placed in a position in the Whiting School of Engineering either before or after your Engineering Innovation course
- Have the potential to receive three college credits from JHU

How to Apply to the Engineering Innovation & JHSJP & YouthWorks Partnership Program
Email the Engineering Innovation Office at [email protected].
In the email, please include your full name, school, and email address and that you are interested in EI-JHSJP. You will receive specific instructions on how to complete the application.
Complete an application for YouthWorks. When you complete the YouthWorks application, please select “Johns Hopkins” as your “Career Interests 1.” The deadline for the YouthWorks application for students who wish to be placed at Johns Hopkins is February 18, 2024. (You can still apply to Hopkins EI Pre-College Programs after that date, but you will not be eligible to be paid for taking the course through YouthWorks.) **Note that students can apply to the courses after that date, but they will not be eligible for the Johns Hopkins Summer Jobs Program – YouthWorks Collaboration.
