Important Information

Requirements for EI-JHSJP students who select EEI or SEE in-person as their placement:

  • Baltimore City or Baltimore County residents  
  • At least 15 years old by March 31 of the program year  
  • Good attendance throughout high school  
  • Meet Engineering Innovation Academic Pre-Requisites  
  • As and Bs in your high school math and science classes.  

For EEI

  • As and Bs in your high school math and science classes
  • Completed Algebra II
  • Completed a course where the trigonometric functions are taught. You must be able to use sine, cosine, tangent, and the Pythagorean Theorem to determine angles and side lengths for right angle triangles.
  • Completed a full year of high school chemistry and/or physics, including a lab. Many students feel that knowledge of physics is particularly helpful for the course. (A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Chemistry or AP Physics 1 exam may be used instead of the high school chemistry or physics requirement.)

 For SEE 

  • As and Bs in your high school math and science classes
  • Completed Algebra II
  • Completed a high school science course with a lab

Accepted students will:

  • Be invited to attend Engineering FUNdamentals (a pre-course introduction to campus and a review of material needed for the courses)  the week before the course starts and have your participation paid at $15 an hour.
  • Be paid $15 an hour for up to 25 hours per week to attend Explore Engineering Innovation or Sustainable Energy Engineering at the JHU Homewood campus as a commuter student.
  • Be paid $15 an hour for up to 25 hours per week while placed in a position in the Whiting School of Engineering either before and/or after your Engineering Innovation course
  • Have the potential to receive three college credits from JHU
  • Have the opportunity to apply for a need-based full or partial scholarship to attend an Engineering Innovation course

  How to Apply to the Engineering Innovation - JHSJP Partnership Program

Email the Engineering Innovation Office at ei@jhu.edu.   

In the email, please include your full name, home address, school, and email address and that you are interested in EI-JHSJP. You will receive specific instructions on how to complete the application.    

Complete an application forYouthWorks. When you complete the YouthWorks application, please select “Johns Hopkins” as your “Career Interests 1.”  Students applying for placement at Johns Hopkins, including in an Engineering Innovation course,for summer 2026 must apply to YouthWorks; that application must be completed between January 2 and March 2, 2026*. More details on this application can be found on the YouthWorks website. 

*Note that the YouthWorks application is open through April 2026, but to be placed at Johns Hopkins, students must apply by March 2.

Complete an application for the Johns Hopkins Summer Jobs Program.  The application must be completed between January 2 and March 2, 2026. More details on this application can be found on the JHSJP website. 

Complete an application for Engineering Innovation.The deadline for summer 2026 to take an EI course and be paid through JHSJP is March 2, 2026. NOTE: You can still apply to Hopkins EI Pre-College Programs after that date, but you will not be eligible to be paid through JHSJP.

Baltimore City Residents:

  • YouthWorks application is open. Please select Johns Hopkins as your “Career Interests 1” when completing the application. 
  • Students must apply to EI and Youthworks to be considered for the program.   

Baltimore County Residents:

  • Students must apply to EI and JHSJP to be considered for the program.    

March 31 through May 15, 2026 

  • Onboarding for JHSJP
  • Vaccination records (childhood immunizations) 
  • Free TB testing through JH Occupational Health
  • Background check and work permit 
  • Enrollment forms for Engineering Innovation to be completed through SchoolDoc

June 22, 2026 

  • First day of JHSJP

June 2026 (exact dates to be announced)

  • FUNdamentals for EEI  and SEE  students – JHSJP participants will be paid to attend a week of introductory activities on the JHU Homewood campus
  • Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the JHU Homewood campus   
  • Students taking  EEI  and SEE are encouraged to participate  

June 29, 2026

  • First day of  EEI  and SEE in-person on the JHU Homewood campus

July 24, 2026 

July 27, through August 7, 2026

  • Students will be placed in a job in an office in the Whiting School of Engineering

August 7, 2026

  • Final day of JHSJP and job placement
