Important Information

Requirements for JHSJP-YouthWorks students who select EEI, SEE, or BMEI as their placement:

  • Baltimore City residents  
  • Baltimore City Public Schools students  
  • Students at least 15 years old by March 31 of the program year  
  • Good attendance throughout high school  
  • Meet Engineering Innovation Academic Pre-Requisites:  
  • As and Bs in your high school math and science classes.  
  • Completed Algebra II.  
  1. (For EEI) Completed a high school lab science course (Chemistry and/or Physics).  Many students feel that knowledge of physics is particularly helpful for the course.  
  2. (For BMEI) Completed a high school Physics course including a lab component where hands-on experiments and lab reports are written. You need to be comfortable with drawing and calculating forces in free-body diagrams, equations of motion, and principles of electric circuits prior to taking the course.  
  3. (For SEE) Completed a high school science course with a lab.  
  4. (For EEI and BMEI) Completed a course where the trigonometric functions are taught.  You must be able to use sine, cosine, tangent, and the Pythagorean Theorem to determine angles and side lengths for right-angle triangles.   

Accepted students will:

  • Receive a full scholarship to attend EEI: In-Person, SEE: In-Person, EEI: Online, or BMEI: Online 
  • (For EEI and SEE) Be invited to attend Engineering FUNdamentals (a pre-course introduction to campus and a review of material needed for the courses)  the week before the course starts and have your participation paid at $15 an hour.
  • Be paid $15 an hour for up to 25 hours per week to attend EEI: In-Person, or SEE: In-Person at the JHU Homewood campus as a commuter student or EEI: Online or BMEI: Online 
  • Be paid $15 an hour for up to 25 hours per week while placed in a position in the Whiting School of Engineering either before and/or after your Engineering Innovation course
  • Have the potential to receive three college credits from JHU

  How to Apply to the Engineering Innovation & JHSJP & YouthWorks Partnership Program

In the email, please include your full name, school, and email address and that you are interested in EI-JHSJP. You will receive specific instructions on how to complete the application.    

Complete an application forYouthWorks. When you complete the YouthWorks application, please select “Johns Hopkins” as your “Career Interests 1.”  Students applying for placement at Johns Hopkins, including in an Engineering Innovation course,for summer 2025 must apply to YouthWorks January 3, through March 7, 2025*. More details on this application can be found on the YouthWorks website. 

*Note that the YouthWorks application is open through April 4, 2025, but to be placed at Johns Hopkins, students must apply by March 7. 

Complete an application for Johns Hopkins Summer Jobs Program (JHJSP). The application will be available from January 3 – March 7, 2025.

Complete an application for Engineering Innovation.The deadline for summer 2025 to take and EI course and be paid through JHSJP is March 7, 2025. NOTE: You can still apply to Hopkins EI Pre-College Programs after that date, but you will not be eligible to be paid through JHSJP.

  • YouthWorks application is open. Please select Johns Hopkins as your “Career Interests 1” when completing the application. 
  • Students must apply to EI, JHSJP, and Youthworks to be considered for the program.   

March 7, 2025 

  • **Note that students can apply to the courses after that date, but they will not be eligible for the Johns Hopkins Summer Jobs Program – YouthWorks Collaboration.   

March 31 – May 16, 2025

  • Onboarding for JHSJP
  • Vaccination records (childhood immunizations) 
  • Paid TB testing through JH Occupational Health
  • Background check and work permit 

June 2025 

  • Engineering FUNdamentals – dates to be announced   
  • Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the JHU Homewood campus   
  • Students taking EEI: In-Person  or SEE: In-Person are encouraged to participate

  • First day of JHSJP

  • Last day of  EEI: In-Person  and SEE: In-Person  
  • Students will be placed in a job in a department office in the Whiting School of Engineering from July 28 – August 8, 2025

  • Students will be placed in a job a department office in the Whiting School of Engineering from August 4 – August 8, 2025

August 8, 2025 

  • Final day of JHSJP
