Hopkins Engineering Innovation commuter programs help you prepare for college through a four-week on campus experience in various locations across the US, including at the JHU Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, MD! Join fellow STEM-loving students from across the country and around the globe to preview life as a real engineering undergrad!

Dates

June 29 to July 24, 2026 (no class July 3)

You will be in class from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily with a 45- to 60-minute break for lunch.

 Academics

  • Explore Engineering Innovation (EEI) classes will be held in Building 201Specific room assignments will be emailed one week prior to the start of the program.
  • Please note that due to the nature of the facility, closed circuit cameras are used in the classroom and common areas of the APL campus.

Your instructors receive JHU faculty appointments to teach your course. They typically have a PhD and teach college-level courses. Local high school teachers or university graduate students also assist with the classes serving as teaching fellows.

Your class will have between 18 and 24 students, with whom you will work closely in teams of up to four to complete engineering projects. Each course has a 12:1 or fewer student-teacher ratio.

You will have access to the JHU Sheridan Libraries online resources.

Curious about what class is like? Visit our Past Syllabi page to explore previous course materials organized by program, year, and course type. While the exact content may evolve, these syllabi offer a great preview of the topics, structure, and hands-on projects you can expect.

Student Life

Please visit the JHU Applied Physics Lab website to view campus map.

There will be about an hour for lunch each day. Students are not to leave campus for lunch. Students may bring lunch from home or purchase from the Starbucks Café in the first-floor lobby of Building 201 or the cafeteria in Building 200. The Starbuck Café and cafeteria are cashless operations, so bring a credit or debit card if you wish to make purchases from either location.

Parking is available on South Campus; please see the campus map for more information. There are no designated spots, so students are welcome park anywhere. APL is not accessible via public transportation.

The Summer 2026 APL Handbook is available for reference.

Please register for your online orientation covering policies and procedures using the registration links available on the Information Sessions and Events page. We encourage students and their families to review the handbook materials prior to arriving on campus.
