FAQs regarding the cancellation of Engineering Innovation 2020

  • UPDATED BIOMEDICAL EI COURSE PRE-REQUISITES:

    • Algebra II
    • Trigonometry or a class that covers the laws of sines and cosines
    • Year-long Chemistry and/or Physics with lab

Please note:  We are making modifications to the current curriculum to reduce the amount of physics required,  and we are preparing an online resource for students to learn the necessary physics concepts.

Do I need to complete the application again?

No.  We are able to move your EI application to BMEI.

Do I need a new teacher recommendation?

    • If we have already received a recommendation, then no.
    • If we have not yet received a recommendation, please contact your math or science teacher.

Do I need to pay the application fee?

    • If you have already submitted your application and paid the fee, you do not need to pay again.
    • If your application was not yet submitted, then you must complete the application and pay the fee.

    How much does BMEI cost?

    • Tuition is $2965.
    • Lab Fees are $275 (shipping to US address is included in the fee)
    • International Shipping Fees are based on the cost to ship to non-US addresses. This can be as much as $350.

I already paid for EI;  will that money be returned?

If you paid towards EI Summer 2020, the funds will be attributed to your BMEI fees.  If your payment is more than BMEI tuition and fees, you will receive a refund of the difference.  If your payment is less than BMEI, you will receive a bill for the difference.  We anticipate that JHU Student Accounts will start to process refunds in the middle of April.

What are the deadlines for deciding whether I want to take BMEI?

I would like to take BMEI online this summer and defer enrollment to EI Summer 2021;  how do I do that?

We are able to move your application from EI Summer 2020 to either BMEI or EI Summer 2021.  If you wish to do both, we will move your application to BMEI, and you will need to apply again for EI Summer 2021.   Please note, however, that there are separate costs for each program.

I am not a citizen of the US;  do I need a visa for this course?

No.  Since this is a fully online course, a visa is not required.

    When will the class meet?

    • All lectures are pre-recorded, so you can watch them at any time. .  The expectation is that you watch a specific video on the first day of the associated module, but you are able to watch it again for clarification.  Please note that there are deadlines for assignments throughout the course.
    • Early in the course, students will be polled to determine when real-time office hours will be held. During office hours, you can ask your instructor or teaching assistant questions.

How will I participate in the course?

Students must be able to access Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Zoom to participate in the course. These are platforms that work in your browser, on your desktop, or through an app for tablet and phone (iOS and Android). Access is provided through the student’s Johns Hopkins online account.

  • I already paid for EI Summer 2020;  will that money be returned?

Yes.  Tuition will be refunded to all students.  If you also paid lunch, residential, and/or international fees, those funds will be returned, too.  We anticipate that JHU Student Accounts will start to process refunds in the middle of April.

I will turn 18 before July 24, 2021;  may I participate in EI Summer 2021 at a residential location?

Engineering Innovation is committed to following best practices regarding student safety and the protection of minor students participating in our program. Residential students are housed together and are supported by our Residential Services Contractor, Summer Discovery. At this time, we do not have appropriate residential accommodations for Engineering Innovation students who are 18 or older.

As we begin planning for Summer 2021, we will seek guidance to learn if there have been changes to policy or if there has been an expansion of residential opportunities that would allow us to safely house a student who is 18. You may contact us by email in early December to see if we are able to make allowances to this policy.

Will I need to apply again next year?

No.  We can move your application from EI Summer 2020 to EI Summer 2021.  We will ask for a new transcript showing grades through the fall of 2020 to update your application.

I am an international student who started the visa process already;  will I be able to use this for EI Summer 2021?

The I-20 Request will need to be re-submitted.  SEVIS records that were issued for 2020 will be cancelled by JHU Office of International Services.  The SEVIS fee can be applied to the new SEVIS record in 2021.

The basic rules for moving a I-901 SEVIS Fee payment between SEVIS ID numbers are:

    • The I-901 SEVIS Fee must be moved between SEVIS ID numbers for the same individual
    • An additional I-901 SEVIS Fee is not required (For more information, see the section, Do I pay the fee?)
    • The I-901 SEVIS Fee amount for the new school or program must be equal to the I-901 SEVIS Fee already paid
    • Only the student or exchange visitor may request the move
  • I already paid for EI;  will that money be returned?

Yes.  Fees paid towards EI Summer 2020 will be returned.  We anticipate that JHU Student Accounts will start to process refunds in the middle of April.

I would like to defer enrollment from EI Summer 2020 to EI Summer 2021, but I am not certain of my plans for next summer.

If you paid tuition and other fees already, they will be refunded starting in the middle of April.  You can contact our office at any time through January 31, 2021, to request that we move your application to EI Summer 2021.
